So enjoy this thread!

I frequently camp along the Bumping River on the east side of the Cascades here in central Washington. This is not to far from the crest of the Cascades. The F-18's out of Whidbey Island love to low level thru this valley. I see'un all the time.

Well last year I hear an unusual engine noise coming down the valley,.... not the usual high pitch scream of the F-18's but a "Whirel" sound.... I go out and look up to see a "-17" contouring the river "Wowzers" say's I.

I've logged a many a mile in the belly of a C-17 and can only imagine what a low ride must be like.

Saw one doing a max climb out of Martinsburg last week from I-81, close enough to hear it over the stereo with the windows up. Looked like it launched out of the trees and was banking away while doing it. A couple hundred yards away and under 100' AGL. Didn't get the nose number as other cages were straying from their lanes as well.

Back during the Clinton years I was over in Saudi and a pair of F15's would take off and do a max climb on full burner every four hours to patrol and that was very impressive as well.

086 - We had both blocked about the same time. Fred made a left out of parking and bumbled down the front of the main ramp. We banged a right out of parking and U turned by fuel cell. Hustled down the back of the main ramp to meet up with a, “Jumbo 596 give way to departing C-17 traffic.” Slow to the show fat Freddy! Heh heh heh…

Trip 098, Spring 2015, Delaware

Just a quick local one day haul from Delaware to Virginia and back to northern DE. Didn’t even pull the gear up from New Castle airport back to Dover.

109 Things started to unravel with a bad APU. Had the ground guys bring me out a power cart, and I also asked for a huffer cart to keep the avionics cool while we load, and eventually start the engines when we need to leave. Ground guy then asks, “What’s a huffer cart?” My Air Force to Navy language barrier was biting me again. While trying to figure out what the guys here use to air start their helicopters, the power cart starts making angry noises. Looked to see a thrown rod right out the side of the block.

110 Had to squat down a bit to see under the jet for when the next power cart would be pulling up.

111 Turns out the Navy doesn’t use big huffer carts. They have, “Lil smokies.” Hooked one up and it could barely run one air conditioning pack at 7psi. Did the rare double hookup when they brought out another and together, they could muster 18psi. Recommended pressure is 20psi to even try to start one engine, but we’ll give it a try since we can do no better. Pulled off the slowest engine start I’ve ever seen on the timing limits, as well as hot as the desert on the flight deck with no air conditioning during the start. Oh well, good enough for government work. Crossbleed start the other three, and lets get out of here.

1924/03/02 – 2015/06-29

“The eternal sky, temptress to all airmen, joined with fate, guardian of the lucky and betrayer of the less favored.” My grandfather was a Naval Aviator and by all accounts, one of the lucky ones indeed. His tails of military aviation captivated me from as young as I can remember. The summer before first grade I recall riding in the jump seat of his extended cab Ford not being able to see outside, but fully believing we were in fact flying a foot off the ground because he said we were. As I was older and more understanding his stories showed more of the horrors of war. Ronald Regan had said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” After the attacks of September 11th 2001, I had asked him if this was the same as December 7th 1941. He said it was, and that we needed to avenge without mercy. To this day my own drive to serve in the United States Air Force comes from that very exchange on a Tuesday evening. A torch was passed of Vargo men going to war. Now my own tails of flying in combat as I told him on my treasured trips to Easton PA and the Fleas Club caused instant smiles of the Old Man and his comment that, “You and me, we’ve become the same.” I can only hope that will never change.

Bougainville Island in the North Solomon Islands during a short little six year TDY that makes my deployments look like a trip to the park. I never did ask what he was trying to rig up with that rope. The man never did buy a ratchet strap in his life. All things tied down in his truck with random ropes.

I had missed my grandmothers funeral when I was in Kuwait on a flying stage, but the trips just came together between two Iraq missions at the beginning of the month for me to be home, and head up to PA.

A good service that my uncle and I were able to get the VFW for a M1 21 gun salute, and two sailors from the Lakehurst honor guard for a flag folding.
