How rare Cab roof Sprayed factory under coat on it

Post by rmurphy »

Who rare is my cab. The roof is sprayed with a black under coat from the factory. I'm kicking around selling all my parts. about 10 years worth. Wanted to build this last truck for myself. 460 C6 Black SWB.[attachment=0]photo.JPG

I have a factory coating like that on my 1971 F-500 bucket truck. Probably to help the cab survive 1) dropped tools, and 2) dropped electrical wiring.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

I believe that was an option made to look like vinyl.

It was a fairly rare option that was offered to explorer models, which started mid year in '68. Only ones I've ever seen with the simulated vinyl top are '69s. But I don't know for sure that it was the only year they were available.

I bought this truck form the original owner's son. He said was an option on it. Had 302 and 3 speed. I guest the roof is the hottest spot. It is cool looking and no rust like some others I had.

Roofs rust from the inside out along the pinch weld. Typically due to leaks allowing water into the cab that condensation allows to get to the seams.

Vinyl roof look seems interesting but I'd imagine it was a different product sprayed with an undercoating gun. That's what I used to spray the lizard skin and it came out pebbly looking.

It was an option introduced mid-year '69 (like the 302, too late to show up in the brochure) and carried through to '72.
