Bought a Bump

Post by dtcohen »

Hi all,

I have been looking for a swb 1968 Ranger for a while and about a week ago one popped up on the local Craigslist. I went and looked at it and ended up making a deal. It has some rust in the cab mounts, the lower portion of the passenger fender, and a few other places, but nothing too major. Originally it had a 360 with a 3spd manual. Currently it has a 351w with a c6 auto. My plans are to put an FE (360 or 390) back in it and use a 3spd OD (borg warner t85N w/R11 od) transmission.

I don't know if there is any way to tell if a truck was originally a ranger package, but this one seems to have all the correct trim. The only thing it doesn't have is the full instrument package. I ordered a Marty report for it, so we will see what that says.

The first order of business will be to replace the kingpins and bushings as they are pretty worn out and have quite a bit of play in them. I would like to upgrade to disc brakes while I am at it.

Nice truck

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a 360. If you're going to the trouble of switching the motor out, go straight to a 390. I'm going the other way (FE to Windsor) so I'd be tempted to stick with what you have and build it for torque. Easier to find small block stuff at a reasonable price.

Jealous of your air cleaner - I picked up the same Ford Motorsport valve covers you have but couldn't find the matching lid anywhere.

Thanks!

I have nothing against the windsor engines, I just want to build this truck up like my grandpas truck was new. The engine that is in the truck now runs good, so I won't be messing with it anytime soon. Right now I just need to find some disc brake spindles and I beams.
