'68 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 Short Box - Cummins!

Postby hivewax on Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:05 am

Just purchased a '68 F250 CC from Oregon that was listed at Old Ford Crew Cabs - it has 16" rims w/tubeless tires, power steering & power drum brakes, granny 4-speed, driver side spot light, & a divorced transfer case 4x4 suspension. Originally came with a 360 FE, but was replaced by a 351M. It sat for 6 years after the mufflers exploded during a start-up. The floor bed is shot and there are some rust spots around the cab roof & doors. With my welding skills, I'm hoping I just need to do some patch work.

When the '68 arrives, the first task would be to have the engine looked over and started. Then, replace all the gear oil, repack the wheel bearings & check the drum brakes.

I'd like to get this rig in driving condition while restoring it to keep my interest. I hope to make it into a dependable driver with some performance modifications in the future like a diesel engine swap & 4-wheel disc brakes. I'll be looking forward in learning a whole heap from you all and posting the progress here with a picture of the rig towing the '66 on a trailer. :D

EDITS:
- Wheels where not 16.5" split rims. They are 16" steel rims w/tubeless tires. Less work for me!

71 F-350 dually flatbed, "little 302" (as some folks here call them) .030 over V-8 with a "baby"C-6, B & M "ghetto" truckshifter, Dana70/4.11 ratio, intermittent wipers, tilt steering, full LED lighting on the flat bed, and no stereo yet (this way I can hear all the rattles to diagnose them)!

The ad didn't have a phone number. He must of contacted you. I probably answered the ad before you. Then, he went on a trip to Hawaii for like 3 weeeks. I called and wrote e-mails around the time I believe he showed up.

I'm interested in the front wheel on this '68 F350. What year and model trucks can I find these?

To me that looks like a front dually wheel so 67-97 wheels should fit as they are all 8x6.5 then after that went to 8x170 (metric).  The ford 8x6.5 will fit on chevy but not the other way around as the hub is smaller on the chevy but aftermarket all seem to use the same center hub size so are interchageable between chevy and ford....Not sure on what that is exactly off of someone else Im sure will know

Here is a picture of the same truck with vintage business advertising on the driver door. Something I might recreate with my work when I have the truck looking & driving decent. :D

I haven't found any early to 1997 dually wheels locally yet on CraigsList or eBay. Junk yards will probably have the tires separated from the wheels, which I don't want.

is that  a old body on newer frame. I see coil front springs. I thought these were all leaf sprung? :hmm:

Before the truck arrives, I like to know what gear oil I should use for the 4-speed granny manual transmission and the front/rear housings. I have some Joe Gibbs 75W-110 synthetic stocked. Is that good for everything? Do I only add 3 quarts just like a 9" housing or is it more/less for the Dana housings? I hope they come with drain plugs!
