67- SWB, CV swap, 2007 3v 4.6/ 5 sp

Post by Coupe5oh »

So I've been lurking for quite a while. I started my project around the first of the year, and think I have enough pics to make it somewhat interesting.

Looks good. What are you planning for the rear suspension?

Wow, that's awesome man! You've been holding out on us!!

What is the engine out of, and how do you plan on controlling it? (looks like a mustang intake?)

Where are you located? The trees say Midwest, but the condition of that cab does not agree!

You've got a great start, keep it going and keep us in the loop for now on!

Yep. Not too far from ya, in Rolla. The cab is very nice... Had been in a barn since the early 80s. Finding a zero rust cab around these parts is pretty rare.

The motor is from a 30k mile 2007 "Shelby gt mustang". Ford makes a control pack for it that includes pretty much everything to make it run. I've just build a return style fuel system.

Can you explain the steps in the crown vic mod? Did you have to do any welding?

It's really not a big deal at all. Cutting all the old stuff out was the hardest job. There are a few guys that put together very detailed install threads that i basically used as a guide.

Here's one (JG F100)...

http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopi ... 22&t=37897

And another (Flyboy71)...

http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopi ... =5&t=47610

Both these threads have lotsa pics, and one (I think flyboy71s) has a drawing with measurements. As for welding, you have to sleeve/ box the section of frame where it bolts for strength. And also build the rear mounts for the lower control arms. Not a huge amount... Check out those threads for a better idea.

Ha, I knew it! Don't ask how, but I felt like you were close by looking at your pictures. I'm actually in Union, so 60 miles away, grew up in Owensville. That's pretty funny.

I've seen that PCM Ford has for the 3V's, I remember now. Was your decision to go with a 5 spd helped by the pack being designed for a manual, or did you just really want a 5 spd? Since you mentioned the return type system, I assume you're getting the control pack with calibration?

looking good, I've often though about a modern engine swap especially with the new 5.0L and 6.2L engines out there. Tubbing the rear? what size wheels you planning back there?

I really started out with a new 5.0 in mind for the truck, but salvage yards are out of their tree on prices, and buying new was gonna require a lotta saving. The 4.6 came along and was a pretty good deal, so that made my decision. The 5 speed eliminates a lotta hassle, I didn't want an AOD and anything else would require a standalone controller of its own. The 5 speed should make it fun to drive. Yeah I'm probably gonna go with the kit that has the tune. I want to get it up and running and it'll be stock for a while. I'd like to do some sort of blower or turbo eventually.

I moved the wheel wells in to basically match the leaf springs. I'm hoping for a 20x 14 or so. It has about 17 inches of space, but I haven't had it back on the truck yet to do any measuring.

Mocked up some fleabay headers I bought to try and gain clearance for steering, and pretty things up a bit. They are gonna help quite a bit I think.

Also got the oil pan switched to one from a crown Vic, as the mustang one didn't clear the crossmember. Tried to notch my factory transmission crossmember and make it work, but since the motor sits so much lower I think it's gonna be easier to fab up something. I'll have to do a little scrounging and come up with some steel to make it out of.

So I got a little more done the past couple of days. It's been like 105 here, so I've just worked as long as I could stand the heat... Had to re-do my crown Vic pan install when I realized that the 2v pickup I put in was a smaller diameter and could cause a massive oil leak at the pump. Not good, so I made the original pickup work in the CV pan by giving the baffle a bit of surgery.

Made a crossmember for the trans out of some thick wall 1.5" scrap tubing. I think it turned out pretty nice.

So the motor is in and all bolted down, hopefully for the last time.

Looking great---I am trying to do something like you with my 67 Crew Cab, in fact the 5 speed and the motor is what I would do after doing all the research I have done now. I wish I had the 3 Valve but alas will have to make due with a 08 Grand MArquis 2V and automatic I picked up. Just like you said I will have to run a stand alone programmer for the transmission or spend countless hours trying to modify a 08 Grand Marquis Harness and I am not that comfortable with wiring. I plan on throwing some juice or a turbo on it. I love all your pictures keep them coming and congrats it will be one sweet ride when you complete it. ALL FORD I love it!!!!
Be grateful for every day :fr:

So I haven't worked on the truck much lately, but the body shop is moving right along. The color is Mercedes iridium silver. Going to spray the floors top and bottom with color matched bed liner.
