1970 F250 4X4 Rebuild / Updating

Post by hfdco4 »

I am in the process of rebuilding my High School toy. It is a 1970 F250 4X4, 360 4 speed dana transfer case. It has the 44HD Front Axle with Power Drum Brakes. I have a rebuilt 390 going in with a replacement tranny, still a 4 speed. I am keeping the dana transfer case as well as the 44HD Axle. I am converting to the '79 F250 Power Steering.

Have to pull the motor and trans. My brother wants the front suspension for his 1970 Crew for the dual piston disc brake upgrade.

Looks like you have a nice project to work on. I wish my 68' was a 4x4. Keep the updates coming.

Slow progress here. The last couple of weeks have been plagued with rain. Three times in June the yard was flooded, approx. 1' to 1.5' of water in the side yard. In my area we actually shattered our rainfall record with 13.5" for June.

Have to travel for work to Colorado Springs. Will be looking for pieces and parts while there though. Plan on moving the truck out of the garage so I will be more motivated to get the frame sand blasted and painted.

I am back from Colorado and just ordered some paint for the frame. I hope to finish the dis-assembly of the parts truck then get the cab off the frames and pull the axles too.

Going to Harbor Freight to look at Portable Garages/Canopies. Need something to cover me and the frame while I blast it. Then I want to do the floor of the cab inside and out.

Plan on pulling the motor and trans from the parts truck Monday, may also pull the bed. Then I need the remove the spring hangers so I can rework the 4x4 rear springs with shackle flip and eliminate the rear blocks.

So sorry for the lack of postings. My wife and I got the engine and trans pulled two weekends ago. Last weekend we got the bed pulled and set on stands. This past weekend I got the roof cut off and most of the cab cut up. I stripped out everything that was un-boltable from the cab and then some. This weekend I hope to be able to cut up the frame so my brother can come get the front suspension and roof. I am going to use the rear spring brackets to do a shackle flip on the 4x4 getting rid of the 4" block. I should have some pictures to post tomorrow.

Rear Spring Front Hanger 2WD.jpg
Rear Spring Front Hanger 4WD.jpg
The first pic is the Rear Spring Front Hanger of the Two Wheel Drive, see how far below the frame it is verses the second pic of the Rear Spring Front Hanger of the Four Wheel Drive. By swapping these and moving the original front hanger to the back and having the shackle point downward. That should provide at least four inches of lift eliminating the need for the block and also eliminated wheel hope as well. Do you follow my train of thought or did I really just derail it?

The cowl section was removed last night. Tonight I may try and cut the front section of the frame off.
