Mr Bullitt, would you , could you please put up more information on that chrome .
My 72 Ranger XLT short bed could use some new chrome.

Does the woodgrain look exactly like the factory original chrome?

I would appreciate any/all information/suggestions/help/advice, from all of you, so let me hear it please.

Hi Mr. Crazyhorse - great questions,

My original intent was to sand and polish my old XLT upper trim, and replace the woodgrain. This would require the faux wood adhesive material, which the FTE forum guys have settled on the 3m DI-NOC 'teak wood' product as the best replacement. I would require 8' of this material, which I then would have to split between the XLT side trim, and requiring almost 6' for the tailgate panel. The 3M DI-NOC was not easy to find in Canada, and I was looking at about $200US plus shipping to get it here. Then there was the question of how to finish the polished aluminum - clear coat vs. regular polishing vs. having it anodized. The other thing I factored in was the sheer work of either pulling this trim off, or putting it back on...I really only want to do this ONCE! So when I considered: (1) bringing in 3M product for correct color, grain, (2) an imperfect solution to aluminum repair and polish, and (3) concerns of being unhappy and having to pull it all off again, I decided to pull the trigger on the Dennis Carpenter product.

NOS was not an option for me,as even the NOS stuff gets banged up over 40 years, and the shipping required to cobble together 10+ parts would be killer.

The DC product is not cheap ($600 US), but for what you get, I think it is a fair price. DC has 15%-off sales, so if you take advantage, that is $510 plus shipping. Fit and finish - I carefully inspected all the pieces over, and they arrived in an 8' shipping tube in perfect condition. I would have personally added more packing material, but it also appears Canada Customs opened the packaging, so I don't know if they removed some of the original packaging. They come with all of the attaching hardware including the rivets. It is bright, shiny, anodized, made with the original tooling (so assuming fit won't be an issue  ), so hopefully I will only have to install them once. As far as wood grain color and match, I'll let you be the judge:

As far as my tailgate trim, I WILL have to repair dents, sand, polish and clearcoat. I found an alternative to the 3M DI-NOC product called Vvivid (teak wood grain), which I was able to nab on Amazon Canada for $70 CAD. Compared to the DC XLT trim, the color is a bit off and the grain on the DC product is tighter. However, when I compare the Vvivid product to my original XLT tailgate trim, the grain is a close match. I'm going with it for now, and have at least enough material for 3-4 tailgate panels, so maybe I can recover my costs if I can find some cores and get this process down pat.

I hope this helps you with your decision!

Cheers,

Steve.

Good job sticking with it. Going to be nice once you get the bugs sorted out and can take for a relaxing drive.

Yesterday I was going stir crazy, so decided to detail some of my existing XLT trim:

Image

Good old Testors model paint. A lot more expensive ($4/each) than I remember as a kid (less than a buck each)...

Image

Process wasn't too bad. I found that applying it somewhat thin with a lot of paint to let it flow provided the best finish. I had a brief thought about using red/white/red (Canada flag) instead of the red/white/blue (my truck was built in Canada after all...)

Image

But in the end, factory-original won out...red/white/blue it is!

Image

I'm happy with the end-product - I think the colors are spot on, which is why I posted the Testors paint codes above.

That's funny. When I did my hood emblems I use Rustoleum industrial spray paint and it's held up well. Hopefully the testors stuff will too.

The Testors is enamel, and is rated for outdoor surfaces. Testors and Rustoleum and brands under the same company, so both products could come out of the same vat.

Got my seats back from the upholsterer, and apparently he had some problems with my design. I was going for a 67 Mustang Deluxe seat style, but this is how it turned out: :o

Door panels turned out great,

Curious to hear what you folks think of this seat design... :?
