Alan's 1967 Shortbed Stepside 4WD

Post by 67Step4WD »

So I'm new to this site, but about 70% done with the truck after 2 years. I'll post up the pics I've taken along the way, but I should have organized them better! I bought the truck on impulse: I saw it listed on Ebay for $3500, but I ended up paying $1500. They only made 400 short-bed stepside 4WD's in 1967, which was the only year for a Dana 21 transfer case, and of course the last year without side reflectors, etc. so it's a "bumpside" with some unique trim and emblems. Wood bed of course, and I dragged it home in very rough shape with a 289 under the hood and the 4.9L in the bed! it was one ugly duckling....But it was from the original owner, and came complete with the original order sheet, owners card etc!

Next I'll post the teardown....

So then came the "easy" part: Teardown. It's not glamorous so not a lot of shots, but we tore everything down to the frame, stripped the cab of everything, and put all the parts away. I kept the 70's rifle rack and of course found a good spot in the shop for the driver's door with VIN. I kinda liked that spotlight up on the roof, still can';t decide if it will go back on there, or in the intended spot!

So I'm searching for pics of the teardown of the other parts 2WD truck I got out of the desert in AZ. it was a mechanical mess but a pretty rust-free body (it's in the background of the finished frame shot). So in short-order The frame went to American Stripping in Manassas VA where it was stripped and powder coated(shout out to James Sejde there, excellent business). As an aside, I want to own a company called American Stripping. All the body panels went there as well, along with anything else that wouldn't fit in the small parts cleaning box....Next I'll post the start of the body work.

Wow good job! Way to save a rare one. That frame looks fantastic is it powdercoat? Looks like a lot of toys in that shop. It almost looks like your front axle is open knuckle? That thing is gonna be sweet!

Yes the frame was media blasted, some slight non-structural cracks and blemishes welded in, and then powder coated. It's an open-knuckle front axle. I'm behind in posting, the motor and transmission are done, I'm in paint. Well hang on i'll post a couple more preps, as I'm trying something different....

OK so the cab did need a new floor on the drivers side: it had very slight pinholing on a corner, but this is a frame up so needed a donor (again original metal) welded in. So now we did a 3M soundproofing spray-on to the inside bottom of the cab. I might still do dynamat, but this was an easy application. I'm going to do the new (sigh LMC truck, I have used only a handful of their parts) gas tank in this as well, and we'll shoot the interior roof as well....

So then a mock-up for fit, hammering, blocking and sanding. Honestly I've got easily 100 hours in blocking and sanding on this truck.... This was the first mock-up, with skim and a few substitute body panels before the real work. Of course shop wheels, I'm doing original wheels, they have been blasted and epoxy-sealed. I'm trying to find the right white paint code....Interior is already shot with correct paint, as is the firewall and bottom of cab. The truck will be shot cab first in a downdraft booth, the bed and rear fenders will be shot at the same time disassembled, and I'll put it together with gloves.

These trucks took some abuse throughout there lives! So to make them straight again can be some what of a challenge. I'm sure yours is going to be very nice, once you finish her. Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Thanks Popeye! Work continues, and while it does my new radiator came in. I'm going to unsolder and rod-out the original, which really isn't in bad shape overall, but I had a 4-row copper/brass one made. Yes the top hose in in the wrong spot, but that's for flow reasons. I didn't want an aluminum one, wrong look for this truck as I'm going old-school on much of it.

Funny how a part coming in feels like Christmas!

First couple pictures back from paint. Ended up at over 200 hours of hammering, blocking and sanding to get the original body panels up to perfect. Here's some quick shots of shorty just back from the curing! I'm going to address the gaps in the front end, but honestly these trucks weren't built for style, so I'll correct them only to where an original perfect truck might have been.....

Thanks Lone Ranger, I'm going for a stealth retro truck. I might change wheels once it's done but I want a completely stock look right now. I've got NOS rear leafs and NOS front springs in it right now, and it sits like a highboy even with the drivetrain in (but notably the bed out). Even as I bought it, the truck sat high and it was completely original. I'd love some input on this: It seems like I can easily run way over-spec wheels and tires, even with the original springs and body mounts?
