352 rear main...Is this right?

Postby kaliona on Mon Dec 31, 2012 10:49 pm

Finally getting around to replacing a leaky rear main seal.  Apparently I didn't do it right the first time so I want to make sure I'm facing the seal the right way before I button everything up again.  These pics show how I installed the last seal.  Did I install it the right direction?  I also offset the end of the seal about 3/8" between the block and the cap.  The only thing I'm going to do different this time (assuming I installed it the right direction the first time), is apply a dab of sealer to the ends of the new seal and to the cap/block mating surface.  Anywhere else I need to apply sealer?  Raising the engine and dropping the oil pan was a PITA and I surely don't want to have to do this again.
Also, any tips on cleaning the groove where the seal sits in the block?

Yes its right.
Little sealer on the ends of the seal. A little from the seal out to end of cap. Then a little bead in the corner of the block were the cap is chamfered.
