manifold problems. 360/390

Post by 71f250highboy »

so I'm attempting to change manifold gasket on my 71 f250 highboy. well apparently the PO did this at some point and used a cheap 14mm bolt instead of a decent grade 8 or stainless bolt/stud. well I snapped it off after letting it soak for 3 days of constant application of WD-40 specialist. now it broke almost flush with the manifold outter edge(closest to inner fender) I know I need to pull hood/outer and inner fender to access it as I'm trying to do it in the truck and don't want to cut and re-weld inner fender in with my tombstone welder. so my question is what is the specs on the factory studs. And how should I go about drilling the rest of the bolt out if I cant get it out with a welded on nut or an "ease out" ? Thanks in advance.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but pulling it is gonna be the easiest way to do it. A little info I got from the guys on here before I did mine is soak the bolts in a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF......I was skeptical at first but after having EVERY bolt come right out - even the studs for the pipe - with no effort I was sold. I use it on everything now.........

:yt: That's what I had to do when I broke a couple of bolts. It was probably easier in the long run. I had to buy a pair of head gaskets, so I ended up with a spare.

The torque specs for the bolts is actually surprisingly low, to me anyway, just around 12-14 ft/lbs.
