Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement

Post by pchelp101 »

The PO of my 69' installed an aftermarket HEI distributor and now the air cleaner doesn't fit. Any suggestions?

I'd chuck the DUI and go back to some favor of stock with electronics vs. points since the newer condensers seem to be very poorly made.

I like Ranchero50's suggestion better, but you could also get risers for your air cleaner at an auto shop. Those HEI distributors are a bit on the large side.

Ahh so you are saying lift the stock air cleaner just enough to fit over the distributor? Wonder if there would be any issue with the clearance to the bottom of the hood ? I'm trying to stay in budget and this may be the less expensive way for me to go.

That's what mine does. The PO installed an Edelbrock carb and air filter, so I have a riser. Ultimately, you probably want to move away from the HEI, just because it's "so Chevy," but the riser might help in the short term. Keep 'em on the road, even if it's not 100%.

You can buy an offset base and top for the air cleaner

I put an HEI distributor in, and just bought a 10" Edlebrock air cleaner from Autozone for like $25. Works great, and the smaller diameter totally clears the distributor.

Good to know. I think my air cleaner is 14". I hadn't thought about going smaller. Excellent! Think outside the box!

EDIT: Sorry, I missed the fact that you came up with a solution. I look forward to seeing pics.

Another solution is to add a CDI ignition box like an MSD, Mallory, Jacobs etc. You can use points in a stock distributor to trigger the box. It will make monster sparks and the points have very little current through them so they don't burn out like normal.

I know they aren't cheap but the come up on craigslist for 50-100 often, in my area anyway. I own an MSD and a Mallory. The both do the same thing. I got the Mallory for $20 at the swap meet and paid $75 on CL for the MSD. If the 'chevyness' of the HEI bothers you this will take care of that too.
