Post by ak-1970-360 »

i might have an opportunity to buy a 429 and i was wondering how hard and what do i need for the swap. ill also need a 4 speed tranny for this swap unless my np435 will work with the 429. it will come with a c-6 but i want a 4 speed.

Because I play a major part in this, I have just the source and link for you!!
1967-76 F250/F350 4WD Trucks equipped with 360/390 engines and standard transmissions T-18 or NP435 converting to 429/460 engine. (Fenderwell Header 79750B in Photo - optional)
http://www.landlproducts.com/Kit1.htm L&L May be a little pricey, but oh well looks like nice products, plus that swap kit is made for EXACTLY wat you want to do, and they offer headers too! FYI That c6 works, but it is junk. There are probably LOTS of NP435's laying out in the valley that anyone would give you for next to nothing I am ASSUMING.

Wow, a 429 swap for you would be cool. Here are some differsnt ways to do the coversion. Yes, L&L sells a conversion kit that makes life simple, but it is pricy.

I put a 460 in my '71 F250 4x4. I used my existing NP435 tranny. The only things I needed to buy where a 351M Bell and new towers from L&L Products. You will have to use the existing 360 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. The pilot bearing will need to be milled, it is to thick for this application. Also you will have to use extra spacers inbetween the bell and engine. I used three all together.

I am not sure if this holds true for the 429. With the 460 it needs to be manufactured '78 and prior. It has to be internally balanced to match the 360 flywheel. The crank should have a "2Y" casting on one of the front throws.

There are other methods. One is to find a 460 bell and flywheel off a '78 manual pick-up. GOOD LUCK and if you find two of them send me one.

Another one is to use a 400 bell and flywheel.

With the last two ideas you won't need to add spacers and you get to use a 12" clutch. I would have gone this way but I did my mod 10 years ago and was not aware off it.

ak-1970-360's truck is a light duty looks like. I am thinkin bout sellin him a 429 minus top end plus the truck and lots of extra parts to go with it. This is an extremely common swap, but i am not really sure about the 4x4s..

I know lots of people that have dumped 460s into their 4x4. I am not sure what you are saying? Are you saying either he or I can't put a big block with an NP435 into our rigs? The way I read it is that he wants to put a big block into his rig that already has the granny 4 speed. I am guessing that you mean F100 when you say light duty?

No offence by all this. Help me out here if I am missing something. :hmm:

ak-1970-360 hasa 4x4 f100 long bed with a 360 and the granny-4. I am saying that the swap kit i pointed out wouldn't work on his truck, but i understand it is a common swap for f100/250, either 2 or 4wd.

L&L makes kits for the F100 app. also. FYI, NP435s are going up in price due to the popular swap for Jeeps that bolt right up to their bellhousings.
