Post by '75-4x4guy »

dupli-color list's

DE 1601 as "ford blue"
DE 1606 as "ford dark blue''
DE 1621 as "old ford blue"

beats me what the correct color is -for 1975.

I am 99.95% certain it is 1606.

Between you (Robert) and Barry I think you guys are right , I have been looking at some pic on the net and I think it is the darker color .
I am going to keep on looking around but I am pretty much sold on the 1606
Barry those valve covers in that pic are just like the ones on my '75.
Mine have the ford oval too, rather then the old script "power by ford"

Even if we're wrong, I think you're making the right choice. My '79 5.0L Capri has the dark blue and it looks gorgeous!

I agree I cleaned up a factory 351 cleveland 4 barrel intake manifold and painted it with the dark blue -it is sweet ,someday I will have the heads re-built and find a good short block and run it .
Like I said I am going to continue research the correct color , its difficult because most of the engines that are original are either covered in dirt, oil and grease, or the paint is really faded and makes it look like a totaly different color. On the opposite side of the coin you have restored or rebuilt engines that have any "ford" paint on them . There again I do like that dark color .
Another thing I wonder about is does the color vary between engine types?
I was looking at a 1973 302 that looked pretty original and it was the "dark ford blue".
here is a 1974 360 http://www.rustfreeclassics.com/images/ ... e_EngL.JPG
The valve cover looks very discolored, now here is a 1969 360 notice that the emission sticker is still there that would lead me to belive that is the original paint

I think the valve covers are very discolored

I think the valvecover has either been painted or is very faded. Note the area where the sticker is peeling, looks darker.

Perhaps this helps?

Well we know for sure that it is not the light blue cause that is for the early models. My idea is to go with which ever one you like the best.

My 360 is a funky black with tinges of brown. It comes off on your hands, tools, clothes, etc. easily. Sometimes the color even drips off the engine on to my driveway. If I rebuild the engine or swap in a different one, I think I'll go with a different color.
