Are all Dana 60 rear hubs the same?

Post by Flightman91 »

Just a quick question, I hope. Are all the Dana 60 hubs for these trucks the same?

I have 2 sets of hubs, one attached to the thick camper special drums, off the truck, and one set on the thinner normal rear drum brakes, on the truck.

I'm buying new camper special drums as I plan to put the rear end they go with in the truck, however they have gotten rusty in the bearing race area. Would I be a take the hubs I'm using, on the thinner set of drums, and have them attached to to the big camper special drums?

Thanks guys

I only have two "observations" that might help to answer (even though neither is a direct answer). My truck is a '67 Camper Special, Dana 60 with the 4.11 gears, and heavy-duty 12"x2-1/2" drums.

First, I read that in order to service the bearings and drums, I needed a 2-9/16" socket to remove the lock nut. When I opened mine up, I found that I needed a 2-3/8" socket. Since then, I've found other references to the 2-3/8" nut. I don't know if this means there are different hubs with different diameters to accommodate the different nut sizes. I have only been able to find a single size for the bearings and races for these hubs, though.

Second, everyone talks about removing the eight axle bolts from the hub. My hubs have studs and nuts. I don't know if this was a "mod" from a previous owner or not, but it is different from what others have posted. I don't think it's anything that makes a real difference, but it is different.

Again, I don't know if this helps answer your question, but I have run into these recently.

there have been some slightly different versions over the years. older dana 60s have the smaller spline count vs the newer ones on the axle shafts. ive seen both axle bolts and studs with the special tapered washers on the hubs.

There are two different rear hubs for the Dana 60 in the F250 trucks. One will be what I will call a light duty set up with the 12x2 inch, externally mounted drums, 12x2 inch brake shoes, this style hub has different hub bearings and races as well. The other style is the 12x2.5 inch inboard mounted drums which are the HD type, and I believe are more common. I have two 67 f250s one with the 12x2 and one with the 12x2.5 setup. the light duty is on a truck with a 6100lb GVW, the larger 12x2.5 is on a truck with a 7500 GVW.

Do you happen to have pictures of these two disassembled. My 2.5 is appart and I'm not exactly sure how is supposed to go back together.

I just read this with interest because last month I changed my rear brakes on my 71 f250 with a code 38 rear end which I read as a Dana 60.
Anyway to make a long story short, the the brake drums take 3 inch pads. I don't know if the truck came with them or if a previous owner installed a rear end from a 350. Anything that anyone can add would be appreciated.
