Help with Axles

Post by rbmead »

Hi,
I have a 72 F100 4x4. in the process of swapping to disc brakes. bought front and back axles from a 79 f150. in the rear i would like to keep my rear housing. it is shorter than the 79 rear axle. I'm using the rear differential. 350 gear 31 spline. now I'm looking for 31 spline axles to fit. cant find a place that will cut and re spline. so anyone know of the proper length and spline i can find in the salvage yards? I'm sure this has been done. I can not find any clear info online.
Thanks for help and suggestions

You'll have to do what I did on my '69 F100 9-inch rear end and get a pair of 31-spline axles from a '68-'72 F100 that has a Ford 9-3/8" rear end --if you're wanting to run factory 31-spline axles to fit the narrower '68-'72 F100 9-inch rear end housing. Otherwise, you'd have to buy a custom set of aftermarket 31-spline axles for your application.

There are two different versions of the 9-3/8" 31-spline axles. One is a 3300# version that takes a 3-9/64" O.D. x 1-17/32 I.D. ball bearing (this is the version I have in my truck). The 3600# axle version takes a 3-9/64" O.D. x 1-5/8" I.D. roller bearing.

The 3300# 31-spline axles will come from a 9-3/8" rear end that has an open (single track) differential. The 3600# axles will come a from a 9-3/8" rear end that has a Traction-Lok differential.

I'm running a factory Daytona N-case 9-inch 3rd member with a 31-spline Traction-lok differential that came out of a '75 F150 4x4.

I hear there is a way to tell the spline of the axle from where the wheel mounts. my 31 spline had two large and one counter sunk divot. and the 28 spline has two ring groves. would that be a reliable way to tell what spline without pulling the axle?
BTW thank you for the info. that helps!
