Highboy Dana 24 won't shift

Post by 71-100 »

Just got a 71 f250 to match my f100 and the transfer case won't shift out of what I believe is 2hi. I have driven backwards and forwards and sideways while trying to get it to shift. Don't know of any options but to pull it at this point and possibly replace it or maybe rebuild. Any thoughts on this and what might be wrong?

The truck runs and drives great which is what I was referring to about driving it back and forth as in the truck and not just moving the transfer case. I was hoping that driving it back and forth with both the hub's locked and not it would free it up but it didn't

I never had it stick completely but I use to accelerate hard then let off the throttle quickly and that would free up the transfer case and allow it to shift smoother in my 71 F250. Just a suggestion.

Did you crawl underneath and look at the linkage? Is it mechanically bound up? I'm kinda assuming it is a divorced transfer case like in my F250's. Not sure on a half ton, never owned one.

I would get both axles off the ground and then see if you can get it to shift at the T case using a pry bar and dead blow hammer while moving the intermediate shaft by hand.

I'll have to give both of those ideas a try. I sprayed penetrating lubricant on the entire linkage and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary but I'll give it another look. Oh and yes this is the factory divorced setup.

The D-24 can get internally bound on the interlock pins making it very hard to shift, and if it's been run low on lube or rater has gotten in it it can condense in the top of the case causing the pins to become stiff as well.

The inboard rail shifts the rear and the outboard shifts the front the rails when extended all the way out is high range and all the way in is low range. and IIRC from neutral the rear moves first and the front second and from engaged it's the front that will move first.
