clutch install 1970 f100

Post by rhg »

I am going to install a new clutch in my 70 f100 4x4. I was looking for any tips on doing the install the right way as appose to the trial and error method. Thanks in advance.

get a full kit... Clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing.

If you can, get a 100% sintered bronze pilot bearing.

Pull ONE bell housing bolt. Go to the hardware store and buy 6 bolts that are the same thread pitch as the one you removed, but 6" long.

Drop both driveshafts, put a floor jack under the t-case, with the wheels of the jack fore and aft. Remove cross member

Pull the starter, replace all the bolts with the longer ones you just bought.

Remove the shifter linkage.

Slide the trans/tcase back, supporting the the bolts and the jack.

Remove pressure plate, clutch old pilot bearing, throwout bearing. Remove flywheel, have it resurfaced.

Reverse procedure for re-installation.

YMMV, I am doing this off memory... ;)

After ya buy those long bolts, do ya gotta cut their heads off ? Or are the heads left on the bolts to prevent is sliding any further back?

Don't forget to look at the flywheel surface and inspect it to determine if it needs to be surfaced or not.
