Ford f100 1970 automat ger problem

Post by johnny55 »

Hey all. I have a Ford F100 Ranger 1970 with a 390 and C6 automat. My problem is that when I put in switch D, it sounds a bit like it hits. (donk) same with the other switches. R, N, 2, 1. The pickup goes well and feels good. but when I'm standing still with the pickup and going to put D in the engine and switching on, it will "donk" it. hard to explain in words. someone like what it might be wrong ?? What can I do so it's quiet and gentle to switch? do you understand what I mean? Is not so good at writing in English

I do not think a little " clank" is out of the ordinary. my uncles 70 f250 has made a similar noise for years. however if its alarmingly loud some things to check would be, play in the rear axle pinion bearing, or worn universal joints in the driveshaft, or even possibly the idle speed is set high and it bangs into gear.

Could just be a U joint. Grab the driveshaft or shafts and twist them while in part. They should not turn at all. If they do turn a little look at the U joints while twisting back and forth. If the rear end yoke gives a little then it could be a worn rear end as already stated.

I was going to say the same thing - check your UJs. They can get pretty loud.

Also if your engine is idling fast it will drop into gear hard.

When the engine is warm it should idle around 750 ?RPMs in gear.
If your choke doesn't open all the way you may have a fast idle.

thanks for pictures. now I understand. this was changed last summer in the summer so it may not be it ?? when I bought the pickup it was bad so it was changed. humm what can it be then ?? It's not a lot of "Clank" and it's rocking, but it's a bit disturbing because it's supposed to be soft when the gear goes in and almost does not feel at all. humm wonder what it might be then ?? any other suggestion ?

* Engine / transmission mounts?

* high idle speed?

What things have you checked?
