King pin changeout

Postby scotts on Tue Jul 17, 2012 7:45 pm

I was informed that I need new king pins in my '69 F100. Thought I would tackle the job myself. Do I need any special tools to do this?

Yes. You can pull your spindles & take them with your king pin kit to a machine shop. The bushings need reamed to match the pins. If you want to do it yourself you will need a bushing driver to drive the old bushings out & the new ones in. You will also need a reamer to ream them to the correct final size. If your grease zerks are in the spindles & not the caps you will need to be sure to align the hole in the bushing with the hole in the spindle.

Save yourself the headaches and have a machine shop do it. Personally, it was worth the $95 I spent.

i did the job myself and it took me about 3 weeks to do in my free time. partly due to that one of the kingpins would not come out.  if you do this yourself make sure that you have a small torch to expand the ibeam and spindle incase you have a stuck king pin.  if you are just going to use the metal bushings i would really reccommend having a shop do it after you remove the spindle. if you are going to us the plastic bushings you can do all the work yourself.
