1971 Ford f100 3 speed column

Post by jeroberts »

I have done a stupid thing! I have been working on a 1971 F100 to I inherited from my Grandaddy after he passed several years ago. At first I was just going to fix all the major issues. After I had removed the steering column to rebuild I decided to go with with frame off restoration. I am ready to rebuild column, but I had already disassembled the column over a year ago saying I can remember how it goes back together. RIGHT!! I did put all the parts in a box. I have read several forum's on Fordification but I am still a little confused. I want to order the all the parts at one time. Are there anybody that has rebuilt a 3 speed column and has pictures? Thanks

Here's a write up I did on the auto column. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=72274 I've also rebuilt a 3 spd column and it's almost identical, just a couple more lever parts at the bottom.

Thanks sargentrs

I have looked at your forum and great job! I have the upper figured out but it is the lower that is still confusing. Was looking at the pictures that you posted and on your lower main shaft is a part that is not on mine. Been trying to figure out how to post pictures but haven't figured that out yet either. I found a list of parts on c & g ford. Wondering if this is all I need? Steering Column Lower Bearing C3DZ-3517-A, Steering Column Lower Bearing Sleeve B1AZ-3518-A, Steering Column Lower Bearing Support Flange C5TZ-3508, Steering Column Lower Bearing Seal Retainer D0TZ-3510-A. Upper and Lower Bearing and Bearing Sleeve the same?

Thanks

Those are all correct and good choices. Yes, upper and lower bearings and retainers are the same. I would also suggest replacing the springs at top and bottom and the metal/plastic shims between the lower levers. Sorry, I'm on my phone so hard to provide links. I purchased all of my parts from Carolina Classics but their website is down at the moment. They are items 7336 and 7D363 in this photo from this page http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... column.jpg. Also the rubber insulator that's on your shift lever. I don't see the part number in that photo but it is available where all the other parts are. Go ahead and replace the rubber bushings in the ends of the shift levers too.

Carolina Classics site is back up.

Thrust Washers (2 reqd): https://www.carolina-classics.com/carol ... er=product
Shift Arm Spacer (1 reqd): https://www.carolina-classics.com/carol ... er=product
Insulator: http://dennis-carpenter.com/gear-shift- ... 1A-7246-B/
Shift Lever Bushings, sold as kit: http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/full.aspx?Page=60 (see # 28 in photo)
Upper column spring is #4
Unfortunately, the lower shift tube spring and nylon sleeve are not available however, you can buy the whole shift tube assembly from CG Ford Parts http://cgfordparts.com/ufolder/fordpart ... 5TZ-7212-C

You can get all the rest at LMC if you want "one stop shopping".
