Leaf Springs

Post by Gray035 »

My '68 Camper Special has been in my family since it was brand new. The rear leaf springs are mismatched (one extra leaf on the driver's side), and I was told it came this way from the factory. The story goes that when the truck had a camper on it, it would ride level because of the extra leaf on one side. Has anyone else heard of this?

In any event, now that the truck is a driver and I have no plans to put a camper on it, I would prefer it to ride level. Anyone know the best/easiest way to accomplish this goal? Can I take one leaf out of the driver's side leaf spring? Do I need to replace the driver's side leaf spring? Do I need to replace them both?

Since you"re in rust free California I'd try removing a leaf and see what happens.
Be careful they are under pressure, the best way is to get two big C clamps to hold them together while you remove the center bolt.
then slowly loosen the clamps.
If that doesn't do the trick try putting the leaf in the other side.
