Tire dry rot

Post by Weaverfields1 »

So, I’ve got a 72 f250 camper special that still has the original split rims on it. The tires still have a lot of tread on them but they do have some small cracks in them. My question is, since the tires have tubes in them should I be concerned about the cracking tires? Is it time to replace?

Take them off and set them aside in the garage tires and all since they are original to the truck and go with a modern 1 piece rim.......split rims were dangerous enough and with tires that are cracking just makes it worse - and if a sidewall lets go the tube isn't gonna help any.........and I'm not even sure you can get tires to fit those rims anymore..........my :2cents: from someone who has had a split rim come apart on our 1962 GMC pulling a grain wagon growing up on the farm............

It all depends on what you use it for.
occasional use around town you should be fine .
I wouldn't take any long road trips .

It would ride a lot nicer with some modern tires , and I doubt you'll find any one to service those split rims.
(they can be deadly)
So keep your eyes open for a good deal in the future.

I wouldn't go further than you can walk home or faster than you can stop on three wheels.

That being said I do have a nice set of Coopers on my '68 Fairlane that I bought in '91 or '92...
