I believe the pan hard bar on the newer ones (80-97) connects to the engine crossmember which is more like the 2wd crossmember (which might be why I keep my 2wd crossmember converting to 4wd and the power steering line goes on that for cooling). Then of course they say the angle of that bar attaching to the axle should be close to the angle of the drag link.

Todd, yes the 80+ trucks use the same crossmember (and frame) for 2wd and 4x4 trucks. They get away with this by using a very different differential offset that clears the crossmember.
