1971 F250 Custom with odd Interior Code

Post by mulletmobile »

Just picked up this truck and have a question. It is paint code M for Wimbledon White, but the interior is 23. Nothing on the VIN decoder page here for that, but in 1970 23 designated blue/light blue vinyl. The bench looks like the 1971 Sport Custom blue with light blue basketweave inserts, blue seat belts, blue door panels and a blue dash pad, steering wheel and column. All metal inside of the cab is Wimbledon White and it has the black rubber floor mat. Could this have been a special order interior trim package instead of the normal Custom package? Is there anyway to pull the info for the build to show all of the order and build (like the build sheets I found in my 1980 Trans Am)? Thanks ahead for any info you can help with.

Anyone have info on the build codes or how I can find out the options ordered with it?

All the codes posted here are straight from the Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog. The first question that comes to mind is...are you sure your truck is a '71? Can you post a pic of the warranty tag?

If your truck ever had the build sheet included with it from the factory, it'll likely be between the seat back springs and foam pad, but it'll also likely be crumbled beyond salvage. The only other option you have would be to contact Marti Autoworks and for a fee and your VIN, they'll give you a rundown on how it was equipped from the factory.

Positive on the 71 based on the tag, VIN tag, and the title. I will put up the tag photo tonight. I have to post a couple of other ones in other threads and I am going to go see if I can find that build sheet. I have had good luck with those as my 1980 Trans Am had both of them intact. One in the back seat springs and the second up on top of the gas tank that was about 75% there. Hoping that luck will transfer here. I had a 1973 Cutlass Supreme as my first car. While looking up the paint code to get it painted we looked all over trying to find the corresponding color. Turns out it was painted a 1972 Cadillac gold on special order.

Ok, here is the photo I promised last night. The first is the truck on the day we bought it the second is the tag on the drivers door.

Still have to look into the build sheet further as It wasn't behind the seat (and this truck is really really clean)!

So far crickets.

Anyone have any info or knowledge about having what appears to be a different years interior (and matching codes on the door VIN tag) for their truck?

My 69 Ford short box had the same issue. Found while working for ford that a few late and early years made trucks and cars had hold over codes or next year codes. Ie. 70 with 71 partial codes or 71 with 70 partial codes. Hope this helps. Most partial codes were for paint, interior color/options and exterior trim.

My '71 CS had the same issue. No answer for it, but I know it came from the factory that way.

Always interesting when opening these vehicles up to see the history. Glad to hear I am not the only, but then again that takes away my uniqueness!

I've contacted Ford customer service and gotten the build sheet info for my truck and didn't cost a thing.

I'll see if I can find the paper work and get back to you on this. They take your vin and send back all the information on your vehicle . It's not a reprint of the build sheet but gives the main info.

odd Interior Code

Post by farmallmta »

The oddest originally equipped vehicle I've ever seen was a '65 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible with wimbledon white exterior, white top, GREEN vinyl interior (ugly as sin) 289 engine, 3spd overdrive manual transmission, and heater delete (in the upper midwest, no less), and radio delete with original delete dash. Talk about weird. I wondered for years about it, and finally was told by a dealership asst. manager from back in the day that it used to be common for dealers to special order a few vehicles that nobody but nobody would consider actually buying, then run those as their "low price specials" in ads just to lure in customer traffic to the lot. The car was for sale in 2002 and I guess I should have bought it, but the interior was just too hideous. I know, change it... but in the meantime, YUCK!

The F-series equivalent of low-price come-ons was the various atrocious green exterior/interior trucks of the late 60's-70's with deletes and the 6cl engines. I can still see those hideous hues from when they were new--but rarely ordered--in my nightmares.

One of my bumps is also a very very pale green, about the color of a frozen margarita. Naturally, I call her Rita. The green/white two-tone works better than some of the all-greens I've seen, but it's a highly individual taste.

Remember avocado green appliances and green leisure suits from the same era? Pretty atrocious looking now, most would agree. One of the most throughly reviled and repudiated color schemes ever. For whatever it's worth, Hank the Deuce LOVED green Fords, wanted lots of green choices to be made available for them. On the other hand, he was notorious for hating red, which far and away outsold the greens he so cherished.
