Interior door handle

Post by RPMinihan »

Hello,

I have a 1972 F250 4x4. It sat for about 7 years and the drivers side door handle / latch mechanism is very sticky. If I open the door from the outside and close it the latch works fine. When I open the door from the inside the latch does not 'reset' and the door will not stay closed. I have the door panel off, and I can reach inside behind the interior handle and reset the mechanism manually, then the door will latch.

I'm looking at LMC Trucks catalog and they list a part called Door Handle Release (16). Is this what I need to replace? My truck currently has the handle inside armrest type door handle (13). I used to have a 68 F250 that had the longer arm pull handles(11). LMC lists those as available as well.

If I buy the replacement Door Handle Release, will the older style door handle work with it? I really prefer them.

Also, the only key I have for this truck only works in the ignition. Do you think it would make more sense to replace the locks on the doors, or to get a locksmith to re-key them / make me a key for them? Annnndddd (sorry for all the questions) my truck has the toolbox on the side of the bed. I have no key for it. Has anyone had a new lock put in / had it re-keyed?

Image

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that door release mechanism is probably the piece you need. Once you have it removed, it may just need some TLC to function properly. On mine, the tang on the handle itself was broken so you may need that also. There are ignition key and door lock sets available on EvilBoy, that's where I bought mine a few years ago. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-1971-1972- ... oU&vxp=mtr As for the door handle, the '67 model year was a unique animal. You won't be able to swap to the old pull handle style without some modification to the door and the door panel and you lose the armrest. Toward the bottom of this page, you can see the differences http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm and this page has a good inside view http://www.fordification.com/tech/doors01.htm

Thank you for the excellent information. I went ahead and ordered the lock set for the doors / ignition. It's been annoying not being able to lock up my truck.

Does anyone have an opinion on options for the bed toolbox lock setup?

Thanks again.
