solvent

Post by Busboy »

Does anyone know of a solvent that will dissolve 50 year old 3M weatherstripping adhesive without taking the paint off?

I'd start off with something fairly harmless like WD40 and some elbow grease.

I've had marginal success with Good Off on my '64 Fairlane's vent window post seal removal. Soaked a rag and pressed it on it firmly for a few minutes then used a plastic scraper to get the bulk of it off. Rubbing with the soaked rag removed the rest. Tedious but got it all off.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll see if some store around here has the 3M.

Goof Off worked great on both the old glue on the weatherstripping, house paint splatters and rattle can over spray that was all over everything when the drivers door was replaced on mine........

Well I tried goof off, the gel type that stays on overnight. It didn't do jack or squat! I have never gotten goof off ever to work. I'm throwing it away. :cuss:

Don't know of a solvent that you can wipe off that hardened up weatherstrip adhesive. Removing all of it is going to take some intense elbow grease.

Wipe it with any solvent like lacquer thinner to try to soften it. Then you might have to sand off the surface of the glue and repeat with the solvent rag until it all washes off. You can try some sort of scraping tool, together with the thinner on a rag. Make sure you've got ventilation too. Have fun!

Brake cleaner and a Scotchbrite pad worked as well as anything.
