Have a tape measure handy? Odd request

Post by Pegtop »

Hey guys, I’ve been restoring my truck for the last 6-8 months and just recently wanted to cut out a section of my bed floor to replace part of it. Here’s the thing...I ordered the correct year replacement sheet metal to match the original lines of the bed and it doesn’t match up. Ordered another sheet from another site and same problem. Found a third site selling panels...and it happened again!!! Three strikes.
My original bed floor has the following dimensions (see pics):

2 1/8 - 2 1/4” on the ridge
1 1/4 - 1 5/16 on the flat lower portion

New sheet metal:
2 5/8” on the ridge
1 - 1 1/8 on the flat lower portion

Anyone feel like measuring theirs to see what you get? I’m wondering if my bed floor was replaced at some point and it’s not original. Either that or these companies simply don’t care about the accuracy of the parts they’re selling. Maybe someone has another theory. Would really like to replace sections of the bed with something original.

Back prior to dealing with my bed rust I had heard tha none of the reproductions were a close match to the original rib contour/spacing. I didn’t even bother wasting the time. Maybe eventually Dennis Carpenter will manufacture a good patch replacement. Probably need to find someone who can cut you some good patches from an original bed.

Thanks for the reply Mak. Glad to see I’m not crazy and these replacement panels simply don’t work. I bought from LMC, Mac’s, and summit. All three buy their panels from the same vendor and none of them work. Came across this company searching the forums and contacted them to see about fit and finish. Will post an update once I get a reply.

In the meantime, if anyone’s selling a section of bed floor, I’m looking to purchase some. Thanks

That would be amazing Bill! Sorry for the late reply, my basement flooded today and spent the day looking after that. I'll take the measurements tomorrow and let you know what I would need and you can let me know how much you're looking for. Thank you!

Just wanted to post an update on the truck bed. Picked up the bed panel on Friday and got to work the same day. All the weak, rusted steel was cut out and the new panel welded in. It turns out the bracket supporting the bed floor towards the back was in pretty rough shape so I made my own as a replacement. A bit of grinding the welds down, scraping off the loose paint and old bed liner, some urethane on a few seams and some primer and putting 2 fresh coats of bedliner and she looks like a million bucks. I also added in some tie-down hooks to the side of the bed which I think will come in handy. A big thank you to Bill Ramsey for the original bed panel!! An absolute perfect fit. It's almost impossible to tell a 4 foot section was cut out and replaced.

Welding and primer. The old section was worse than it looked. The steel was very thin and had lots of pinholes making it impossible to weld to.
