charging system

Postby dave E » Thu Apr 20, 2017 8:23 pm

I recently bought a 69' F-250 with wiring issues. Electrical is definitely not my strong point but I have been gritting my teeth and diving in. My issue is that my ammeter constantly reads discharge! The higher the R.P M. the closer I get to charge but never make it! Have used wiring diagrams from this site and as far as I can tell I have repaired all spliced and wrong wires properly but cant seem to solve the problem. I am positive it is something simple that I am overlooking. HELP!!!

Since you say that it gets closer to the charge side when you rev the engine, it kind of sounds like the gauge is out of calibration. You might try a new gauge. If the battery seems to stay charged then yes you have a bad gauge. I would put a voltmeter on the battery and see if the voltage increases when you start and rev the engine. If it does then you know it's charging at least some.
