instrument panel

Post by 72 brownie »

So what exactly does this knob do on the voltage stabilizer do? i found some info on it on this site, but couldn't ans my question all the way. There was a problem with my fuel, temp and oil pres gauges not reading correctly, i found on here that someone turned this small knob with a pair of needle nose, i gave it 3/4 of a turn clockwise and it corrected the readings on the dash.
from what i understand this stabilizer puts out a signal lower than 12vdc to the sending units, depending on the resistance that comes back is what the gauge reads...... if i understand correctly..... correct my math if im wrong. so does this knob raise/lower voltage or increase the rate at which it sends a signal? my gauges are reading properly now but i just want to know for my own benefit

and by the way :fr: :fr: !!

I know that twisting the knob will make your gauges read higher or lower, depending on which direction you twist it. I know it adjusts the amount of voltage sent to the gauges which adjusts the way they read. The way I have always adjusted them was to fill my gas tank completely, and then adjust that knob till the gas gauge reads full. Once that is done, the other gauges should read correctly too. The stock gauges are only so accurate, but this is what seems to give the best readings on our 40+ year old gauges.

Thats exactly what i did, my temp gauge still reads low but it does read better than before. So your saying it regulates the voltage? either higher or lower. i did not test the voltage coming out of it but that makes sense. im glad i did not buy a new one.... defiantly a pick-a-part pocket item :D . LMC sells it for $50!!! what a joke!

You are on the right track! This unit is called a Instrument Panel Voltage Regulator (IPVR) it controls the voltage to the gauges.
The gauges are all based on the old 6V systems from the past so they just added the IPVR to cut the 12V down to 6V after they went to these new fangled 12V batteries  ...

The IPVR works by cutting the voltage in and out (On/Off - Pulse) at a speed/rate to make it look like 6V average. So YES you are adjusting in the Pulse rate but it also, and more importantly, is adjusting the Voltage, so that the scale of the gauge calibration works correctly.
(side note: this makes a DC square wave signal to the gauges but the pulse is not seen at the gauges because they don't react fast enough to see it  )

Hope that was a simple enough explanation for everyone :D
