Frustrating turn signal

Post by Chuck2422 »

On my 69 ranger my left turn signal works normally, I turn on the right one and the oil and temp lights blink and not the signal. You can hear the flasher working. The only wiring I changed was the new stereo I wired in. I have removed all of that wiring just in case but no change. I have wiring diagrams that I have reviewed. I don't know why these other lights are blinking. I have verified all grounds and traced the wires. Please help!!!!

That's really interesting. If I had to venture a GUESS, I'd say you lost a ground on that side of the instrument cluster and the turn signal indicators are grounding through the other lamps causing them to light up. Shouldn't be horrible to troubleshoot with a decent voltmeter.

Thank you, I will give that a shot. Although I have figured out a lot of wiring issues on my truck, I am very much a beginner.

I have even had strange electrical issues from having a burned out fuse. When I found and replaced the old fuse, no more issues. Check all of the fuses. Also, check for bulb sockets that may have been spliced backwards, their wires switched around.

Are you sure the t.s. bulb just didn't get put in the oil light spot ?
When you turn on the key does anything light up?

Thanks for the input. I know the bulb connectors are in the right spots, both the oil and other lights blink on each of the instrument panel flicker. I have checked all 5 fuses and everything is good. It seems the previous owner liked to hack wiring up. I have found countless things that were wired incorrectly or just plain horrible.

***UPDATE*** No fuses burnt out, no bulbs accidentally moved into wrong spots on the panel.

Status, I have running lights but no turn signals or brake lights. I have checked every wire and compared it to the wiring diagrams. Everything looks to be ran correctly. I guess I will start with the Emergency Flasher and go from there. I am out of things except the actual switch.

***Resolved***

Previous owner hack job of wiring had me chasing incorrect wire color versus wiring diagrams. The problem ended up being a bad Emergency Signal Switch in the glove box. I eliminated it and wired in the switch in the column. I replaced my 69 column with the 76 column that came with the disk brake front suspension I installed 2 years ago. I did't want to mess with the flasher stuff since I knew it looked like the wiring was botched. Now everything is wired correctly.

Mr Chuck, congratulations.

My 72 Ranger XLT short bed (Old Red) has the same problem.
My right hand (passenger side) turn signal does not work.
Everything else does including hazard & park light.
I think I have it narrowed down to the wire from the turn signal bulb to the turn signal switch.
I have not had (or took) time to start on it.
I hate removing the glove box, radio, instrument cluster & etc..

Problem came back....I then raised the truck and again traced all wires to find that 1 wire for the right rear turn signal was crimped under a washer that I installed with my electric fuel pump back near the rear suspension inside the frame. black wire hidden inside the frame blocked by the mufflers... Finally a real fix.

Mr Chuck, congratulations on a job well done.
I hope to spend some time on my turn signal problem in a couple of weeks.
