Think i have a bad starter

Post by 1guydude »

Well my truck will start cold. I give it a cpl pumps and itll fire and turn over. It warmed up and died. I used.to have to feather the gas and it would start. Slow chug but start.
Currently no 2nd start. I can chug away and nothing. Cable to starter and soleoid were a little warm.
So it must be my starter or ground.... tow truck guy jumped my truck with his little box and said i just needed a bigger battery. I didnt make it home but to the freeway exit where it crapped out on me in idle. That day it wasnt running good. Id have to feather the gas to keep her running. Gonna rebuild the carb and try and get my headers off i guess so i can do more work. Any advise or anything is appreciated. Thanks

Get back to the basics.
Charge the battery ,then have it tested.
Get big, clean battery cables , don't use the cheapo clamp on ends.
Do the same with the starter cable.
Get a good ground to the engine block AND the solenoid.

then if you still have trouble test the starter and charging system.

Get the tune and choke setup correctly. Make sure the fast idle circuit works when cold and shuts off when warm. The choke will need the pipes the manifolds so it opens as the engine warms up.

Surprisingly when the choke work correctly the dang engines run well cold and warm.

Funny. When i took my carb off yesterday for rebuild. The choke wasnt even hooked up or functioning properly. Gonna wrap the starter and get the carb rebuilt. Hopefully the itll be easier to tune and such after. Thxs ranchero for the advice/info. I wanna go back to the pull manual choke i i can and not use the carb piece. U can see it in my thread/build.
