Do the parking / running lights all work / just no headlights (neither high or low beam)?
Many areas to start your troubleshooting but here are a few problematic areas on our bump era trucks.
1) Dimmer switch on the floorboard. They are constantly getting wet / look at the wiring harness that plugs into the dimmer switch / check for 12 volts there (with the headlight switch turned on / dimmer switch pulled out check for voltage to this harness). The dimmer switch itself goes bad too.
2) Power to the headlight switch itself (with the switch pulled out / checking for voltage to the headlight switch harness) / and yes the switch is a real problematic area as they go out frequently due to the amperage burning out the contacts (built in circuit breaker) in them.
3) Bulbs / wiring harness(s) to both bulbs / check for voltage at the light bulb socket with the socket unplugged / the headlight wiring harness upgrade is the best safety improvement you can make on this truck for less than $100 plan on doing it.
4) Other wiring harness area / here's the wiring harness for the lighting on a 72' model / I found on my 71' model the 72' wiring to be pretty similar.
