68 f250 4x4 disc brake conversion

Post by 84bronco4x4 »

i have recently purchase a 68 f20 highboy and the drum brake setup all the way around is worn out and ready to be replaced. i was planning on towing a race car with this truck coming spring time and was wondering where the best place is to buy this conversion kit new ive seen alot of parts for f100 but am having a real hard time finding any parts at all for the f250 and also power steering is another thing that would be great since i am running 35 inch tires and will be doing alot of tight turning around the pits at the track and backing up the trailer

so anywhere that sells parts for these f250's please let me know so i can get my truck ready

The kits to convert your front end to disc cost several times more than buying a far better complete disc brake front axle. You can use any of the 76-79 disc axles, but the 77.5 to 79 high pinion axles would be best with a 4" lift.

For power steering you can bolt on 73 to 77 F-250 4x4 power assist or you can make the 68-79 2wd box or the 77.5-79 F-250 4x4 box work as well with some cutting and welding.

:wel: to the site.

I haven't seen any conversions for disk brake setups for the F250 closed knuckle D44. There has been small talk about people that have attempted it. Best and quickest solution would be to stick an open knuckle D44 disk brake axle under your rig.

I did this PS coversion and like it.

http://www.blackbirdscustomtrucks.com/index25.html pricey like Dustin said, usually a complete HP 44 is pretty easy to come by.

I've never tried it on my Ford but have often wondered if the disks from a 70's/80's 3/4 ton chevrolet with a 44 or 10 bolt would work. I have a hunch they would bolt right on with little to no modification from the spindle out. You could likely come by the backing plates, spindles, rotors, hubs, etc. at a wrecking yard. The only snag I can foresee is the possibility of having to do some grinding on the big knuckle housings for caliper clearance. I've seen it done on a model 25/27 jeep housing using chevrolet 1/2 ton backing plates and calipers with a specific jeep rotor on the jeep hub. That's how we converted my dads jeep before he swapped in the open knuckle 30 with the same disc brake setup as before.

Aside from "Chevy" parts on a Ford...... All the chevy's I've ever seen have had the common 6 bolt spindle like our fords. The hubs are likely the same length making the outer axles shafts the correct length. The bigger brakes would probably clear the light duty knuckles with little work.... Maybe I'll try and tackle this someday in my spare time unless someone else wants too before I can get to it...... I also figure the brakes from a 78/79 3/4 ford would go on pretty easy but why bother when you can just swap the whole axle in?

Ya, I would think it would only work on the small ball style also.

I wonder if anyone on the NW-Wheelers bourd would have a 3/4 chevy axle they don't want?

I have a big ball, so I am out. If you wanna try it out on your rig let me know. I will come over and help ya out.

I already have a 78 HP44 with discs to put in my 69...... Although my plans for the front that is in there now do involve putting it under a chevy sometime down the road...

I have a 73 bronco d44 w/ chevy disc brake kit on it. only
draw back is stub shaft is tad to short and you can't get the outer snap ring on. I haven't been into this axle yet(after my kids truck is on the road is bronco's turn) so not sure if spindles are 5 or 6 bolt.
