Anyone play with a baby Lincoln?

Postby Ranchero50 on Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:41 pm

Been thinking about getting one of these '01-'03 Lincoln LS's.  They sell for under $4k, have 3.9l V8s with 280hp and are really comfortable.  Wondering if anyone has had one and knows of any common problems?

Here's one I may be interested in.  Going to let it set for another week and see if they sell it before I pursue it.

I was going to get a new Mustang GT but even with 2.9% interest it's a $550 / month payment I don't want for 6 years.

I could have bought a black '01 a couple years ago for $3500 that was getting a motor swap.  Buddy said it was actually a great handling and powerful car for 3.9l 4 door.

I'm looking for more comfortable options vs. my '93 stang

Wow, no way! I now know why my neighbor's Lincoln like this two houses up from me exploded when he was trying to start if a few months ago! As well as it being tagged by his "rival" crack-head gang here with a rag in the filler neck the next week.
Love the way they look though!

According to wiki they are the american twin of the Jaguar S type and run a Jag engine.  In 2003 by using variable exhaust cam timing they achieved 87% of torque by 2000rpm.

I like the looks and want something smallish that I fit in and runs well.

A friend of mine has one of these, though I'm not sure on its exact year, but it looks just like the photo posted at this thread's top.

He and his family love it.  They say it's quiet, runs perfectly, and feels super powerful.  That said, I think they put only a few thousand miles on it each year, since it's not their primary car.

I looked at those too a few years ago, it would have been nice if the Lincoln also came with the Stype-R supercharged engine, 400hp. Saw someone selling something close, it was an LS with GM LSx swap.

Well, the old Ranchero spit out the clutch cable (again) this evening as I was pulling into the dealership to look at this one:

At this point I'm pretty sure it'll be mine by next Tuesday for less than $8k, hoping a good bit less.  3.9l V8 fly's.  I was surprised how well it pulled and was seeing 22mpg at speed.

Could've bought one last spring for $2200, with a cooling system problem. The 3.9L seemed to be plagued with cooling issues.  The guys across the street bought it at auction, tried to fix it for about six weeks, and sold it for less than they paid for it.  I think I was smart to pass on it.

I do like their looks though.  I'm now driving a near new 2011 Crown Vic LX, and lovin' it.

Good day Jamie,

Looks like a nice choice (and a good color)!  What are the performance specs on this particular year and configuration?

I'll be curious to hear how you like it, since I've been planning to replace our 1992 Mercedes 400E with something newer, more American, and cheaper to maintain.  The 400E has a very peppy 270HP 4L V8 and gets about 25 MPG with mixed freeway and town driving.  But I think I could do better with something else in the maintenance cost department.

Robroy, this thing scoots pretty darned good.  Surprisingly good for only being a 3.9l V8.  The wiki has some decent write ups about the different years in the references.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_ls

Long story short, $11.900 on the windshield reduced to $8900, salesman gave me a paper with $8400 after the test drive which turned into $8000 after another fifteen minutes of talking.  Did some math, called the bank and ended up with and agreement to buy it for $7700 out the door.

Image

I did some quick eBay shopping and found a nicer steering wheel for $53 and some OEM floor mats for around $30.  I'll probably end up with some OEM HID headlights and a louder exhaust before it's all over.

Congratulations!  Looks like a beautiful, like-new car that you'll enjoy for many years to come.  Sure is a bargain compared to buying new, too.

That is a good looking car.

Wonder if a new 5.0 will fit... :P
