Door jam corner rust

Post by Lone Ranger »

Hey guys so my 69 has rusted through in the forward corners of the door jams. The junk yard right by my house has no bumpsides in it(due to michigan rust) but they do have a few dents. Is it possible to chop out a section just below the lower hinge all the way down to the bottom and over to where the jam just meets the floor pan?

Metal is metal... my buddy with a 72 Camaro pirated metal from a Cadillac... I renamed it The Camillac.

That's true. I guess with a grinder and a welder you can make anything fit. To bad the deal I found on that miller 211 fell through. Once the floor boards and jams and one cab mount are fixed it'll be perfect

I think you can buy NEW patch panels for the dentside trucks , but they might need to be modified.

Rock auto has the patch panels for the bumps. At least I just ordered a set as I have the same issue.

I've got a guy lined up to do some welding for me. He's going to do the floor pan and the cab mount and the front door jam all passenger side. He wants me to remove the weatherstripping, the floor mat and have the fenders ready to pop off to save him time (and me money). What do I need to do to get the fenders off? I'll have to drive it about 15 minutes to his shop. Not sure what I'm allowed to have removed from the vehicle when driving. Thanks everyone.

4 or 5 bolts at the front. The 2 at the top of the fender are the hard ones to get to. 5 bolts across the top. 1 at the bottom rear, reached from underneath. 1 at the top rear, reached from inside the door jamb. Butyl rope seal between the top of the fender and inner fender so be careful prying loose. Once you have those bolts in the front out, the grill is pretty much just flopping around on the ends so you might want to just leave a couple of bolts in there and finish removing the fenders when you get to where you're going. Also, spray all the bolts with PB Blaster for a day or two before starting. Don't be surprised if one or two break when you're removing them.

Thanks Randy! Can't wait to get a chunk of this rust dealt with. I live up in the pacific north west (Victoria, BC) so its unavoidable. After this chunk I'll still have the drivers side inner fender and some heavy surface rust on the roof. And the hood. Oh and theradiator mount and.....

Since you mentioned it, the dent side inner fenders can also be used with some modifications http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=44581

Dent side door opening weatherstrip mounts differently. I don't remember exactly what was wrong with the lip but it needed modified some.

I used '78 Bronco pans and cab mounts on my '71 cab.

Ranchero there is a 78 bronco in a junkyard a mile from my house. Did that fit right into place on your bump? Is that going to decrease the strength of the cab cutting out that much of the floor and pillar? Also could you have replaced all that while leaving the cab on the frame?

I did this in '07 so it's been a while. If memory serves I used as much original metal as I could. Cut the bronco above the firewall seam, then ground the flange flat. As you can see in the pics, the blue is original, the yellow is Bronco. There's a visible weld seam there that I was going to cover with stainless but never did. I did coat the inside of the cab with lizard skin so it hid a lot of the ugly. As you can see, the Bronco floor matched the Bump pretty well.

Structurally it's at least as good as Ford did it and maybe stronger since I flange welded around the floor joint inside and out.

Wow that looks great! You want to do that same thing to my cab? :D Also how did that homemade lizard skin hold up after all these years? I definately want to try that. Did you spray that over regular roofing tar?

The skins is still in good shape, surprisingly good shape. I don't remember if I sprayed directly over the tar. The tar was messy but I'm glad I did it. I also put the plastic liners in the front fenders to help protect the metal from rocks.

That's good to hear about the rust protection. I think I read you were in Maryland. I'm in northern Michigan so salt and rust are rampant like I'm sure it is there. Once my box is sanded and painted I get to start interior and floors. I'm definately going to be rereading your thread for that. Thanks for the info everybody. I love this site!
