Steering Gearbox worth

Post by shortbedCUSTOM »

I recently replaced the steering box in my '68 Ranger due to a tons of slop and a severe leak. I replaced it with Napa's replacement. I believe it's a Cardone but can't remember right off hand. Questions pertain to the one I pulled out of the truck. Is it worth anything? Should I hang on to it or just pitch it? Eventually I'd like to step up to a Redhead box but that won't be for a while. Please advise.

If you plan to do the Redhead box in the future keep the old one for a core, that way the truck will not be down and you will not be out of pocket the core charge.................... :2cents:

Personnally, I'd say pitch it. They weigh a ton, and if it already has a ton of slop, you won't use it as a back-up. Depending on what's worn, you might be able to rebuild it, but it sounds like it's useless in its current condition.

On edit, I just saw eggman918's response. Yes, if you want to use it as a core, then do keep it.

Assuming the box is power, then someone may rebuild it and the box has a core value. Keeping it depends upon have enough space.

It is a power box and I have NO space for it. I'm literally having to step over it when working in the garage.

I have a manual box w/pitman arm that has about 50K miles on it and works fine... is it worth anything? Converted to PS so I don't need this anymore...

kinda surprised napa didn't want it for a core. If anyone charges a core for those that's whats its worth . now is it worth stepping over? that's up to you.

Yeah, I was surprised they didn't want a core also. I think I'll pitch it.

I think most of the replacement parts are imported. The manufacturers use new casting. So there is limited demand for old OEM parts and no salvage value and too large for a paper weight. you might drop if off at a recycling center if handy otherwise it probably will become part of the local landfill.
