Looking at buying this truck

Post by sonic reducer »

1970 F100 flareside, 302, t-18 4 spd, new brakes, newer wheel/tires. Owner says it was a 6 cyl and he put in the 302, he is unsure of the miles on the motor, doesn't burn oil or leak. He replaced the cab, fenders and hood because of rust and dents on the original cab. He says the truck has some rust but the cab corners and cab mounts are good. He is firm on $4k. I will look at it early next week. What do you all think? Thanks!

4 is ok I guess. He’s getting a good price at that $$.
Check the rust. Check the VIN.
Nice bench seat.

It really depends on what “some rust” means, and what kind of shape the engine and transmission are in. If the rust is fairly substantial, and in a place that isn’t somewhat easily reparable, it’s probably more of a $3k to $3500 truck.

Do the gauges all work? How badly has the wiring been hacked into, if at all? Those are definitely things I would check.

If it is solid (superficial rust) and is a factory short bed frame and the tile isn’t a mess... seems like an OK deal.

The bed could use a little work. I hate that the driver's side rear on the top rail is messed up. Always loved the flare sides. Around here that's a $3000 truck at best. Otherwise not a bad deal.

Anything specific I should look for concerning the 6 cyl to v8 swap?

Since the cab has been swapped, the vin is on the frame roughly underneath the alternator, correct??

If cab is swapped you’ll have 2 diff. VINs. One on the frame one on the door plate. May/may not be an issue.
(ask seller which one is on the title?)

As long as the title is good, looks like a great price to me. It’s a shortbed, here in Southern California that truck would be 6-8000 any day

6 cyl to V8 swap is a non-issue. Not much difference in the weight, so no worries about the springs collapsing enough to cause camber issues. I made that swap once myself and it hardly made no difference in ride heighth.
So.. as Geradr4 asked... Did you buy it?

 I would jump on that truck for $4K as I see a lot...or potential there!

Look at the frame mounts/engine perches, (where the actual motor mounts bolt into). when changing from 6 cyl to SBF those had to be changed, (the I-6 is the same for the FE but the SBF mounts are different. I'd also look closely at the steering column rag joint, (that's one of my "sore thumbs" on our older trucks as it's usually an accident waiting to happen.

I passed on the truck. It began to bother me that it was sorta pieced together. The VIN on the title matched the frame, so that part was legit. It's an ok deal for the right person. Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll keep plugging away on my 72 f250.
