Ryan, it looks good so far, but I think you made a mistake on your frame. You need some ties to run between the two sides where the rafters go so the weight of the tarp doesn't cause roof to sag, That will cause the rafters to push the walls out and you run the risk of the whole thing failing. You should also add some diagonals on the uprights so the whole works doesn't want to fall over. The tarp will add some stability, but you should plan on the framework stabilizing the structure. The extra ties will triangulate everything and that's the strongest structure.

Another thought is if you plan on leaving it up for a while is to get a bunch of five gallon bucket and put each post in one and pour a 80lb bag of quickcrete in each one. Then drill a hole on the top of the bucket and use that to tie off the tarp to.

If anyone ever needs directions to your house just tell them to go to the house with the big blue tarp shed.

So what was the total cost of this project anyways? How well do yo think it would hold up to the weight of snow on it.

hey 71ford100,

total cost Estimation:

just about $200 for pipe
free for 40x60' tarp (dad got it from work)
free huge mats to use as floor

about the snow,
we do not get snow here but with the rain we had some problems with the rain making huge puddles on the sides making it droop down. so we got some duct tape (temporary just for the night) and stretched the tarp tight and tied it to the poles with the duct tape.
if you are planning on doing it similar but with snow, I would add a few more pipes from the very top peice going down to the top side piece. and a few more in places that seem reasonable.

If I were going to do that in snow country, I would substitute electrical conduit for PVC pipe.
Speaking of snow, want to see what Lincoln looked like just over ten years ago?
I remember this well.

i will be painting the truck blue inside and partially out, its going to be a little annoying with everything being blue in there.

its not water that made the tarp end up on beside the garage, its the darn wind.

re: pvc garage is 90% done (new problems 11/23)

Post by 1971ford »

  the pvc shelter is now shattered/broken/wripped/bent/twisted/ruined truck stuff, and completely wet inside.. and laying on my truck!!!!!!

I was laying in bed (within 2 feet of shelter) when i heard a very loud SNAP, i knew it was going to be something horribly wrong with the shelter. I looked out my window and noticed that the shelter was missing a corner. so my dad and i went out side to see the carnage and noticed that every corner of the roof was drooping half way to the ground because these sections were filled with water that had collected. i have pvc sticking threw the tarp, holes EVERYWHERE ( i had to stab the water saggings with a knife because they were to big to push out), my new and old bench seat is now soaked, there are pvc shards on the ground, pvc broken, couplings shattered, and thats all i remember right now. oh and the highest point of the roof, is now lowere than the sides.
LUCKILY, i had recently moved ALL my parts into the truck cab to get out of the way when we were sinking poles in cement. and luckily, i have a camper shell on the truck, so i was able to store the bench seat and stuff in there.

wow that sucked.

this weekend were going to take the tarp off, patch it, give the structure a good rebuild ( replace stuff and were going to add alot more roof peices to prevent sagging, and lot more cable supports), put tarp back on, and weight sides of tarp down with bags of cement to prevent sagging.
thats it for now.

re: pvc garage is destroyed. (heavy rain tore it apart)

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I always thought that I could use my wall tent as a temporary garage if I had to, it is 16x20 feet and has a free standing aluminum frame. Once it's set up and staked down it's solid as a rock. I've spent several nights in it with a Wyoming blizzard blowing outside and never had a problem with sagging or leaks.
