re: pvc garage is destroyed. (heavy rain tore it apart)
Ryan,
I feel your pain man! Down here they sell the equivalent called "everglades shades" with the metal poles instead of pvc.
My wife insists we get one to cover the boat, (I keep the bump under the carport/Expedition out from under the carport).
I saving all these I can to get some concrete poured in the next year.
"Mother nature" has her ways of telling us we can't fight her!

i dont mean to be a jerk or anything but i could have told you that pvc(even schedule 80) wouldnt hold the weight of water or withstand the wind. I work with pvc during the summers installing well systems and laying water lines. you would be better to get a pre-fomed metal one from wal-mart or a surplus store. they only cost about 150 buck and come with a tarp. you can buy walls and ends to. We use one for elk camp and i handles snow, wind, rain, and sugarpine cones. just my two cents

Ryan, check out the aluminum frames for wall tents in the web site I posted. They sell an angle kit that might be a better set up than PVC. The angles are pre-welded and you buy the aluminum pipe from Home Depot. It would be alot stronger I sure and it sets up quick and easy.

were going to use pvc again. but were going to use more of it. were going to have twise as much top beam supports.
the only reason that it got destroyed is because we were in the middle of sinking poles and i has all the tarp clips and weight off the tarp, so water built up and it sagged. it was rained on before and was perfect because the tarp was tight. it just wasnt ready for this unsuspected rain.

It'll work if you can keep the tarp tight. Stay with it man. You'll get it all worked out and back to the task at hand...

72 stepside,
the worst part is not being able to work on my truck
its horrible pain i go through not working on my 69 for more than a day! i have to find stuff to do on my 71, like today i scrubbed the bed of gunk.
TheEskimo and everyone,
an hour ago my dad and I took the tarp off and folded it in the backyard. we then looked at the pipe wreckage in the side yard and it actually isnt bad at all. half the stuff that is sagging and unconnected, is only because of the glue not holding. so we just need to reglue most of it with better glue. and I only need 4 more T fittings.
we arnt going to cut any corners this time, we are going to make this structure rock solid before the tarp sees it again.
I just hope its soon so i can work on me trucky!!!!!!

my dad and I got lots of work done on it
when we went out there, we had no clue where to start! then we decided to first replace the broken T's. once that was done, we re-glued joints that arnt suppose to move with better glue. then we ran two cables from the sides of the structure. Then, I got on my truck cab and camper (scary!, i was really carefull on where i stepped), and I pushed the roofing stuff up so it all had a angle again. then my dad ran around and pushed all the connectors and stuff together while I had the stuff straight and lifted. then he ran more cables to keep the roof arch, and glued stuff. Then we ran more cables and then we were done
BEFORE! (after we took off the tarp)
the cement bags we used to weight down the tarp are now everywhere
AFTER
if you look really hard in these pictures you can see the white cables.
try to find all 6 cables
my dad has a few ideas to help support the roof and prevent sagging. one is we can arch flexible wood (stuff used as little garded walls) over the top so the water would flow frealy off, OR we could just run some more pvc pipe.
PLUS the tarp will be much tighter this time, and will be trimmed to fit the structure, unlike before when we had 15 ft of extra tarp in each corner.
the tarp and roof supports (whatever that may be) will go one in two weeks because i have to study for finals in school. BOring!
OH, and i got some work time on the truck
see my 69 project thread for what i did. nothing major.

Before anybody makes any comments about my use of duct tape on a joint, it is just holding the joint secure while the glue dries. not that there is anything wrong with duct tape!!! Any yeah, I hear you guys, we should have used metal instead of PVC. With some more wire cross bracing I am hoping it will be more solid than last attempt. After we get the tarp trimmed to fit and reinstalled with proper arching to the roof, I am going to brace it more to the house eaves and the side fence. If it comes down again, I am just going to let Ryan kick his mother's car out of the garage. (just kidding)

re: pvc garage is up again!! (new pics)
Ain't duct tape great! The bracing looks like it should work alright, I would think the key is to keep the tarp as tight as possible, water weighs alot! Good luck!

good news-
we added 6 more support pipes to the roof, so water wont build up and sag as easy. When we finished putting these 6 pipes up, we looked at how crazy we must of been while looking at the huge gaps between pipes!(now pretty small gaps)
the tarp is back on again!
its about time!
we also trimmed quite a bit of excess tarp off. and cut one corner.
but i still cant unload the truck of parts and start working on it again just yet, since we will need to replace alot of the mats and make sure it stays up...
bad news-
a bunch of big storms are going to come in starting on thursday which is tomorrow. the storms are suppose to be the biggest we have had in a decade, and are suppose to be almost hurricane winds!
so, i am not going to work tomorrow, so i sit in the pvc shelter all stinkin day watching it closely, for any weeknesses, and to make sure nothing will happen.
ill update tomorrow. hopefully. if im not trapped under hundreds of gallons of water and tarp and broken pvc. we'll see.
