16" wheels on HP 60 front

Post by averagef250 »

I've taken all the lift out of my truck and sold my 35 bfg's to a friend and was going to buy 33X12.50 BFG muds, but really don't like how wide they are for thier size. I was going through the BFG book today and found 255/85 R16 bfg muds which are load range D, 33.3" tall and about 2" narrower than 33X12.50's. I've always run 16.5 wheels on ford disc brake front ends because I have always been told that none smaller will fit. Well, I put an old 16" split rim on the front of my truck and it clears the dana 60 brake caliper brackets by 3/16". I'm running 86 Dana 60 outers on a 78-79 housing. Is there anybody out there who could say that 16" wheels will fit a ford 60 front end? The brakes I'm running are not 78-79 style, but 85 to 97 style. I'm going to run Eagle 589 16X8 wheels if they'll clear. Thanks.

80's trucks had 16" wheels...

Grind the caliper for clearance if it just touches.

I'm not a fan of grinding the caliper brackets, but I guess you have a good point. If a steel wheel clears with 3/16" an aluminum wheel can't be too awfully much tighter. Good info on the 80's trucks running 16's though. And now that I think about it, I believe all the heavy duty 80's and 90's F-250 4x4's with the Dana 50 front axle share the same front brakes I'm using. And I know I've seen a ton of those trucks running 16" wheels.

I've got the 589's on the front of my hp60. 16x8 with 285/75-16 tires. It is a 78 axle though.

I have (1) 16x10 wheel that got messed up inside edge... Im not sure if it was my 95' or my 85' D60 that did it though? Leaning toward my 85' since it was on it last and didnt notice it till then but only one side (1) rim.
