No positive detent on '72 Transfer Case

Post by Guardsman »

I have a 72 F100 with the NP435, not sure which transfer case.

There is no positive detent into either 2WD or 4WD, like you get with a transmission, and 4WD will not engage when I first put it in. If I drive it around a bit, and then try it again, it will go in fine, and the 4WD works fine, but still no positive detent.

Does this sound normal for these?

Thanks,
John

I am going to say you have a single range dana 21 T-Case. I amnot sure about the detent action on these. I would think that it would have something to keep it from loosing gear.

My dana 24 is pretty smooth when shifting, but you do feel it when it is in position.

As far as it being stubburn. If it is anything like mine at times it can be a chore switch gears. I do beleave the D21 is gear driven like the D24 but not possitive.

Here is a exploded view of the D21 and PN# 7219 looks like the spring and detent ball.

Don't take my word, I am not real hip with the D21 single range T-case.
