4 speed question ??

Post by kaptnkaos »

Hey Guys,

What would be a good 4 speed tranny to mate up to a 390 fe for a non-truck application ???
I've got dreams of buildin' a '60's rat rod...
I found a '64 Galaxy that looks to be complete except engine, tranny and grille... for $300
The body looks pretty good and the glass is all good...

Ford has a "Top Loader" 4 speed that they used in the Mustangs and other car applications. I know for a fact they were in the 67 GTs, a friend if mine had one, back in the day....I would love to get a 64 Galaxy for that!

I have a RUG-AJ, The best of the best. It is the big in and output shafts and close ratio. It is about double of the lesser toploaders. You must also be aware that there were 3 different shifter positions of tailhousing for different models of car. The 64 toploader was first year and had some weaknesses that I don't remember. Mine is a 68 428 Fairlane piece and is for sale. $900

I am basically doing the same thing as you all are talking about...I'm putting a toploader behind a 390 in my '67 swb. My tranny is a toploader out of a '70 Torino Cobra (429 ci), its designation is RUG-AU, 1-3/8-10 spline input, 31 spline out put. The hardest part has been finding the correct bellhousing! There are lots of the truck bell housings around (C5TA-7505B - they have ribs on the outside). I finally found a housing from a car C9AA-6394C ( These are smooth-no ribs). The easy part was contacting David Kee! This guy knows his toploader stuff! Even hooked me up with an 11" clutch disc with the 1-3/8 -10 spline center. All other parts lists I've seen, that size spline only comes in 12". So if you are serious about putting a toploader in, take a look at his website for ID charts on the bell housings and toploaders. Or give him a call... all my orders have been at my house the next day!

Right on guys...

Thanks for the info...
I have to get the '68 CS done before I can do anything else...
Right now, I'm more in the learning and fact finding stage and just playin' with the idea of doing a rat...
I'd really like to build a '62-'64 Galaxie the ones with the rounder bodies, Ford changed body styles on the '65's to the square look and I just don't care for it (even though it is one of the most popular models to date)...

Kap, start with a $1000-$1500 car, you won't be sorry. That hosed out pos for $300 needs way too much work, even if it is going to be a rat.
And if you go with a stickshift car (what else is there?) make sure you get all the Z bar and linkage, that stuff can add up.

Wow Freightrain...

Both of those Gal's are PHAT...
Now that's what I'm talkin' about... pure nasty meaness...
A little prettier than I wanna to build, but awesome just the same.
Is there a particular 4-box to look for ???
Model #... brand etc
I know my '68 GTO ran the aluminum cased Muncie M-21's or 22's, whatever I could get my hands on, until I replaced the last one with a Sag box.
I never had a problem with scatterin' a tranny after that...
