Help! 1972 Alternator wiring

Post by F150780 »

I had taken out my motor(428CJ) out last weekend and I got it all back together now but everytime I hook up the battery the black/blue wire off of my alternator heats up and smokes. I know I did something wrong here and Im hoping someone knows what wire should go where. The alternator is a schucks/kragen replacement and has 4 posts. A BAT,FLD,GRD,STA and only 3 wires. A white/black, a oranage/black and the black/blue I believe. The orange wire goes to the regulator, the black/blue goes to a ground bolt at the regulator and the white one goes to the startor solinoid. The manual I have shows a different alternator and it doesnt show letters on the picture so Im lost. Any help will do. Thanks.

My 72 has an AutoZone replacement, but the posts all lined up correctly on the connector.
Orange/black wire goes to the Field
White/black wire goes to the Stator
Yellow wire goes to the ALT light/voltmeter
Green/red goes to the I terminal- not sure what I stands for.
