Grille polish

Post by 69 Camper Special »

Does anyone know of a good polish for a 69 Ranger aluminum grille? The grille is straight, just oxidized badly. I hate to try anything not specifically for aluminum for fear of ruining the finish altogether. Also does anyone know the exact name for the color red on the horizontal center bar? Source for paint? Any help is appreciated.

I think I may have found it. A friend put me in touch with a friend who owns a metal refinishing place. He suggested Windex (blue) and CHEAP aluminum foil balled up. Spray on the Windex, rub with the balled up foil. tried it last night on one of my headlight doors and it seems to work. It will take a lot more work, and needs to be followed with a bit of metal polish to take some more black off that comes in the process. Before anyone else tries this, let me keep trying it on my piece. That way, if it turns purple or something, We've only lost one original piece. I will let you know how it turns out in a few days. I set it outside on the porch today to see how it stands up to Georgia heat today.

The aluminum foil thing seems to get light oxidation off the aluminum. A lot of elbow grease involved. Not sure it is worth the effort. Doesn't seem to hurt the aluminum though. If anyone hears of anything else that works, let me know.........

Neverdull seems to polish alot of things. I used it on my grille and got some of the oxidation off. You can find alot of use out of that stuff.

I have used "wadding compound", and it works pretty good. It is chunks of rough cotton batting with some sort of polishing compound in it. Comes in a metal can. It works great on aluminum, chrome, stainless - or it has for me anyway. Should be able to find it at Lowes, Home Depot, or any decent hardware place.

71-F-250SC-72-F-250C, is Never Dull the same thing? I think the stuff I have has a real similar name.

I believe that is called Never Dull. The wadding that is. Worked well on my buddy's aluminum radiator. Lotta rubbing though.

Neverdull is the cotton wadding with polish in it.

I gave it a whirl with some Never Dull. This grill is quite pitted so I did not get a real "shine" with it but I think it's an improvement.

Thats how it was with mine, but if you rub on it long enough it will smooth out and look good. The only problem is I dont have the time to do it.

Even just with the Never Dull? It doesn't seem like it has enough grit to it.

If aluminum grilles work anything like aluminum motorcycle engine casings, you can do the whole 200-400-600-800-1000 grit wet-dry sandpaper thing with them, doing a final polish with a buffer. Tedious but you can get an almost chrome-like finish in the end.
