what have you all done to clean up your body side trim?

Post by edmccloughloch »

I am having my truck painted in two weeks...just stripped off most of the trim pieces....what have you all done to get those cleaned up? Just looking for ideas, because buying new pieces is too expensive, but I want them to come out nice...are there places that refinish those pieces and repaint the black lines? Same with the grill.....

I'm working through the anodized aluminum trim on my '66 F-250. I just posted a brief tutorial on the FTE forum under paint and bodywork. In a nutshell I remove the anodizing with caustic solution, polish the aluminum to a chrome-like finish, then send it out for bright-dip anodizing.

2bocat,
Welcome to the site! Stop in at the welcome mat and tell us about yourself and your truck.
Maybe you could submit your tutorial to Keith and see if it could be included here.
A lot of us have been banned from F*E so we can't see it.

thank you, I checked out that tutorial and it sounds like the pieces should come out really nice. Here's the question though---it sounds like this process could get expensive.....what does the anodizing cost for say an 8 inch piece of bed trim? with all of the buffing pads, products, anodizing, etc....I am guessing it might just add up, so just wondering how much you figure it would cost to do a whole truck's worth of aluminum pieces and front grille.

Yeah thats what I thought...I suppose I'll get some estimates on having them professionally redone...since I am already pushing my budget for this truck...but I can see how it could be enjoyable.

I'm stuggling with this as well. My truck did not come with the side trim and I'd like to add it. You can basically get the whole truck worth of trim, including the brackets for $400.00 brand new.

I've found various incomplete pieces for sale and when you add up what people want for them, plus buying the brackets, plus the fact they they always need restoring, I might as well just buy it new.

That well may be your most cost effective option.
