F-100 4x4 power steering conversion

Post by green68250 »

So I read the write up on how to convert a 1967-1972 F-100 4x4 to power steering. I got myself a power steering box off a 1976-79 f-150 4x4 and a 2 wheel drive box off of a 1973 f-100 2 wheel drive. When I went to swap the guts from the 2x box into the 4x box I found out they are the same contrary to what the write up says. So my buddy figured out that a box off a mid 80's Ford truck (I used an '88 to be exact) had the right guts in it. So I swapped the '88 guts into the '76-'79 4x4 box and mounted it in the same location as the manual steering box on my '69 4x4. My truck has a 2 in body lift and I had to modify the core support and inner fender but nothing major. The power steering box lines up with the lower right bolt from the manual steering box so you only have to drill 2 new holes. I cut and sleeved my steering shaft. All I need now are custome power steering lines and I'm good to go. I thought this may be helpful to someone else thinking about doing this conversion.
Honestly, I really would rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy.

Why not just use the 88 box, was it way different?

I'd be real...curious to see as to how you drilled the "two new holes" you speak of above. :hmm:
The existing bolt holes in the frame have bushings/sleeves that are factory installed from the factory to keep the frame from collapsing due to all the stress the box puts on the frame rail at that critical point. That has always been one of the most major pitfalls of chebby 4 X 4's, (cracked frames at the power steering box frame mount location) over 90% of them I've ever seen had cracked frames, (even most aftermarket "scabbed on" plates have failed to strengthen that section enough as it's a critical mount.
