Stubborn Dana 24

Post by hdman90 »

I have a 1970 F250 that has been sitting for many years. I have recently brought the truck home, but would like to get it started and moving under it’s own power so I can park it in its temporary home.
However, I cannot get the Dana 24 gear selector to move from 2H. I can wiggle it forward just a tad, but it does not move out of fear.
Any suggestions? Obviously it will need pulled and gone through eventually.

You could place a bar between the plate and t-case that connects the front and rear shift rails and try moving it. Or a raw hide or plastic mallet to move the selector towards the case. Just depends on what way you want it to move. This would be easier if the the driveshafts were not attached and you could spin the yokes to help engagement and determine what mode the case is in, but it should still be able to move it this way, What mode are you looking for? You are already in 2H which I would think would be ideal for moving the truck under its own power.

BTW, if and when you pull the case apart and have a question PM me. I did mine already. However its on the shelf for now since I replaced it with a divorced NP205.

Two things i would know. Actually 3 remove the linkage. Remove the bottom cover 8 bolts to inspect. Then also remove the detent balls and springs to allow the forks to move freely. Then its soak it all and wiggle it all.

I did get the transfer case removed, I will have to open it up and see what everything looks like internally. I’m honestly not sure what to expect...

i rebuilt mine with all new bearings, seals, and speedi-sleeves. works perfect and does not leak a drop.

look closely at the pocket bearing, if it is worn, there is a fix. you will need to look it up.
