Ford American Road Camper 1973 project

Post by Bennetch John 123 »

I’m restoring a 1973 Ford American Road Camper. I’m looking for a 73 Super Camper Special to go under it. Ford now it will have to ride on my GMC 3500 duramax. But my goal is to have it back in its glory by the 50th anniversary of the camper which will also be my 50th birthday. I’d like to take it on the Power Tour to give it its due credit.

SCS trucks are everywhere, why go on a GMC?

I inherited a GMC from my late father in law that we use for camping. I intend to find the right truck. At least I won’t post pictures here till I got the right truck under it.

Why not, pics are what makes the world go 'round.

Should be able to find a couple nice trucks next month at the Spring show.

I have the camper gutted so I can replace the plywood floor that is soft. When I get it up on the truck I can take pictures to post. I was afraid to post a ford accessory on a GMC and get banned for life on a Ford site.
So my idea is to take the next 4 years to put the camper back to original and like new. And have it ride on some Ford truck for shows and take it on the power tour for its 50th anniversary. I struggle to know what to restore for the truck. The super camper special has a setback axle just for the large overhang of the camper. But they only came in regular cabs. I love big roomy crew cabs for traveling. And I like Diesel engines. I think that I would die if I had to travel with a 6 miles to the gallon 460 like the original truck had. I guess that contributes to the demise of the camper. So I may build a one and only.
