rear gears

Post by ak-1970-360 »

Can anyone tell me the gear ration in my truck. Or what it is close to. It is a 1970 f-100 4x4 360 np435 single speed transfer case.
thanks

The ratio code should be stamped on the VIN data plate on the inside driver's door. Go to the 1970 Ford F-series Pickup Data page to decipher the code on your tag.

Sounds like things could get VERY interesting about the time you have to get the truck registered! ;)

I'm gonna guess that you have a Dana 60 rear. Am I right? (Does your rearend have an access cover on the back side or a center-section that drops out from the front, which would make it a Ford 9"?) Regardless, unless your cousin removed these too, there should be an small metal tag held on by one of the access cover bolts (or center section bolts). Crawl up under your truck, get the numbers off this tag and post them here, and we'll be able to tell you what you have.

You most likely have a 9" with a 3.50:1 gearset . . . but there is a slim chance your axle is a semi-floating Dana 60. They are very rare but they're out there. Check the tag on the differential.

Yes, it should be on the title....but the rear axle codes are not contained in the VIN. The VIN is the first line of the data tag, and the axle codes are on the second line.

If, perchance. the tag is missing from the axle, here is a way to closely approximate the gear ratio:
Put the rear of the truck up on jackstands.
Put the tranny in neutral.
Make a mark on the driveshaft and the differential in line with each other.
Have someone count the number of times the marks line up as you turn one of the rear wheels 1 complete rotation.
The last turn of the driveshaft will probably be only a partial turn, so you will have to estimate the percentage of a full turn which it made. If it makes 3 and 3/4 turns your ratio is around 3.75:1.
You get the idea.

The reason I asked about the vin is so that he could look it up on the i.d. pages on your site. Should be right IF it hasn't been swapped out.
