1970 F100 Shifter Tube Replacement

Post by MtnRanchr »

Yesterday I developed a problem with my '70 F100 automatic 2WD, the shifter will no longer operate. When I have my wife move the shifter on the column there is no movement at the linkage to the tranny. I can shift manually by moving the linkage by hand under the hood. Today I removed the steering wheel and checked the shifter collar and its is not broken at the top end of the tube. I've not pulled the steering column yet but I assume the problem is at the bottom end of the tube. In searching the only thing I found so far is the following post from 2007:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=26587

There was a reply by Fordification that included 2 links to help show how to take the column apart and a file called schematic. Unfortunately, those links are dead. I've never take a steering column apart and hoping I someone can provide some advice on how to repair and reinstall properly. Its coming up to spring planting time and I really don't have tons of time for trial and error to get the truck repaired so any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks... Glenn

Thank you very much 390... this is great. I did some searches but apparently not with the right search terms.

Now to find a replacement shifter tube, I don't want to replace the entire column if I don't have to.
